Key Facts
- Read the full licence name, including its letter conditions.
- Match the licence to the exact source asset.
- Describe your planned changes before assessing permission.
- Attribution alone does not answer every licence condition.
What Do The Licence Letters Tell You?
Creative Commons offers licences with different conditions. Its overview describes attribution, ShareAlike, NonCommercial and NoDerivatives conditions. It also distinguishes licences allowing commercial use from those limited to noncommercial use.
- BY: give the creator credit.
- SA: share adaptations under the same or a compatible licence, as the exact terms require.
- NC: permission is limited to noncommercial use. The overview describes this as not primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
- ND: the licence permits sharing in unadapted form. Whether your planned edit is an adaptation still needs assessment.

Read that overview to identify the relevant conditions, then open the exact licence attached to the work. Do not stop at a “CC” badge. The version and terms are part of the asset's identity for your project.
Describe what you will actually do with the clip. “Crop it, combine it with narration and publish it on a commercially operated channel” gives you a use to assess against the terms. “I am sharing educational content” leaves those details unanswered.
What Does A Filled Decision Worksheet Look Like?
The author-created example below compares fictional river footage candidates for a geography explainer. It demonstrates a decision process and does not grant permission to any real clips.
To use the worksheet, enter the original source, exact licence and version, proposed edits and distribution. The output is a condition-by-condition review, an attribution draft and any interpretation questions that must be resolved.
Scroll this table sideways to see every column.
| Review Field | Candidate A | Candidate B |
|---|---|---|
| Exact asset | Fictional river clip RV-04 | Fictional river clip RV-19 |
| Licence shown | CC BY 4.0 | CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 |
| Planned use | Crop, shorten and add narrated explanation on a commercial channel | Same planned use |
| Initial condition review | Attribution and exact terms need checking | NonCommercial and NoDerivatives conditions conflict with the proposed plan or require clarification |
| Source authority | Creator's original publication identified in fictional record | Repost by an unidentified account |
| Production decision | Continue the exact-term and attribution review | Do not use for this plan; find a suitable alternative |
Candidate A still needs the exact-term and attribution review. Candidate B also has unresolved source authority and conditions that may conflict with the plan. Choose another candidate if you cannot resolve those questions.
Describe each planned change. “Crop vertically, remove the opening and overlay a diagram” gives you specific actions to assess against the terms.
How Do You Prepare Attribution?
YouTube's licence guidance suggests including the work's title, author, source URL and licence information when crediting another creator. It explains that material used under Creative Commons Attribution needs credit.

Use those fields as the start of your record, then follow the exact licence's requirements. Keep a description of your changes where required by the applicable terms. Do not invent an author's name from an account handle if the source supplies a different credit.
For the fictional example, prepare the credit with these fields: title “River bend study,” creator as listed on the original record, original source URL, licence CC BY 4.0, and changes “cropped and shortened.” Replace every descriptive field with verified information before publication.
What If The Source Is A Repost?
Trace the asset back to the stated creator or another authoritative record. A copied licence label does not establish that the uploader had authority to apply it.
Compare the file, title and version. If the repost includes added music, captions or a compilation edit, assess those layers separately. The original footage's licence may not describe the complete reposted file.
If the source cannot be established, choose another candidate rather than letting the edit depend on an unanswered ownership question.

When Is The Asset Ready For Production?
The review is ready when the exact source, licence, planned use and required public information agree. Resolve outstanding interpretation questions with suitable evidence or advice. Completing the checklist does not settle them.
Connect the selected asset to the finished project's licence log: https://dreamwild.ai/guides/video-asset-licence-log/
Keep permission separate from the creative quality of the Short. A properly assessed licence does not automatically make a video original, useful or eligible for monetisation. The creator still needs an explanation worth watching and a platform review appropriate to the finished work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Every Creative Commons Licence The Same?
No. Identify the exact licence and version on the source record before assessing the planned use.
Does Giving Credit Resolve Every Restriction?
No. Credit is one part of the review. Check the licence's other conditions against the commercial purpose, changes and distribution you actually plan.
What If I Am Unsure Whether My Edit Is An Adaptation?
Do not decide from the filename or the length of the excerpt. Review the exact terms and obtain qualified clarification if the distinction affects permission.
Can I Change The Licence On Someone Else's Asset?
Do not assume you can. Determine what the applicable licence permits and requires for your specific use before selecting a licence for the finished work.
