Key Facts
- Capture one complete task, not an aimless interface tour.
- Prepare demonstration data before pressing record.
- Keep the control and its result understandable within the crop.
- Review menus, notifications and typed text for private details.
What Is The Smallest Task Worth Demonstrating?
Choose an action with a visible before and after, such as moving one saved note into a project folder. That gives you a defined task to record. “Organise your workspace” leaves the starting point and result unclear.
This author-created example uses a fictional note-taking tool called Pebble Notes. The interface is invented solely for this planning exercise. The Short demonstrates moving “Weekend packing list” into “Trips.”
The viewer should see where the note begins, how the move command is opened and where the note ends. Account settings, unrelated folders and the rest of the desktop do not help explain that task.
What Goes Into The Capture Brief?
Complete the brief before recording. In a real demonstration, replace the fictional field values with the exact screen and account you prepared.
To adapt the brief, supply the task, interface version, demonstration data and intended frame. Finish with an agreed capture boundary, required result and conditions that stop the recording before private information appears.
Scroll this table sideways to see every column.
| Field | Filled Fictional Brief |
|---|---|
| Viewer task | Move an existing note into a named folder |
| Starting state | Demo account; one note selected in Inbox |
| Demonstration data | Invented packing list; no addresses or booking references |
| Required controls | Note menu, Move command, Trips folder |
| Required result | Note visible inside Trips after the move |
| Capture boundary | App window only; browser tabs and desktop excluded |
| Interruptions removed | Notifications paused; unrelated windows closed |
| Stop condition | Unexpected account picker or personal file dialog appears |
| Final privacy check | Review capture frame by frame at every menu opening |
Prepare the note in advance so typing does not dominate the demonstration. If entering text is the lesson, use text you wrote specifically for the recording.
Avoid relying on a blur that you intend to add later. Removing private material before capture reduces the number of repairs the final review must catch.
How Do You Choose The Crop?
Make a short test capture containing the widest menu. A crop that fits the resting interface may cut off the destination selector.
For this fictional task, use a close crop around the note menu for the command, then a slightly wider result view showing the Trips heading and the moved note. Add a brief establishing view first if the close crop would leave the viewer unsure which screen they are seeing.
Keep the pointer visible when it provides useful guidance. Do not move it continuously while speaking. Park it away from the words, then move directly to the next control.

How Much Should You Explain While Recording?
Write a short narration separately: “Open the note menu, choose Move, then select Trips. The note now appears inside that folder.” Record the screen slowly enough to show each state, rather than trying to perform the action at normal working speed.
Leave clean pauses around clicks so the edit has room. An uninterrupted capture can still be shortened later, but an important dialog that flashes past may need recording again.
If you join multiple takes, preserve the state. The same note should not change its title or content between selecting the command and showing the result. A quiet continuity error can make a simple interface look confusing.

What Should You Check Before The Recording Leaves Your Device?
Watch the whole export, then inspect every moment where new information enters the screen. Look for account names, profile photos, notifications, email addresses, private folder titles and recently opened files. Check tooltips and search suggestions for identifiers too.
Confirm that the instructions match the demonstrated interface version. If a control label has changed, rerecord or explain the difference instead of silently showing an outdated step.
Finally, ask someone to identify the starting state and result from the video. If they can name the buttons but cannot explain what changed, add a clearer result shot. Save the capture brief with the approved file so a future update starts from a known demonstration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I Record My Normal Working Account?
Prefer a separate demonstration account with invented data. If you must use a working account, inspect every visible surface and avoid actions that reveal private information.
Can I Fix A Tiny Interface By Zooming In Afterwards?
Sometimes, but test first. A tighter crop can remove the menu or context needed to understand the action.
Should I Record The Entire Workflow In One Take?
Use one take when the continuity matters and the steps remain readable. Separate captures are useful when a clear pause or a different crop would help.
Does Blurring A Name Finish The Privacy Review?
No. Check other identifiers, notifications, browser tabs, filenames, search history and the details revealed during the action.
