Key Facts
- Separate platform eligibility from your creative duration target.
- Inspect the final export rather than relying on the project settings.
- Check audio restrictions before extending a Short beyond one minute.
- Keep a record of the upload date and channel type.
Which Duration And Shape Rules Apply?
YouTube's current guidance specifies square or vertical shape and a maximum of three minutes for standard-channel uploads from 15 October 2024. For Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner, its FAQ places qualifying square-or-taller uploads longer than one minute and no longer than three minutes on the 8 December 2025 boundary: earlier uploads remain long-form, while uploads on or after that date are Shorts. Older uploads can therefore have different treatment even when the files share the same dimensions and length.

Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height. A square frame has equal dimensions; a vertical frame is taller than it is wide. Resolution is a separate question: two files can have different pixel dimensions while retaining the same shape.
Check the exported file properties and watch the file outside your editing or generation tool. A preview window can conceal unwanted borders or a crop that cuts off important labels. Record what you actually exported rather than what you intended to export.
How Long Does Your Explanation Need To Be?
Use the shortest version that delivers the promised idea clearly. This is an editorial recommendation, not an algorithm rule. A compact demonstration may need little setup; a comparison may need enough time to show both cases and explain the difference.
Read the script aloud at a natural pace. Mark the moments requiring a visual pause. If the result feels rushed, remove a secondary idea or allow more time. Speeding the voice until every sentence fits can hide an overfilled script.

What Changes When You Go Beyond One Minute?
YouTube states that a Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim of any type, including a manual claim, is blocked globally. It cannot be played or recommended and is not eligible for monetisation while blocked. The help page says this does not itself apply a channel penalty.

That makes audio review part of your duration decision. Do not assume a music track is suitable for the whole video because it was available for a shorter use. YouTube says most songs in its Shorts Audio Library can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. Check the actual track allowance.

What Should Your Export Decision Sheet Include?
Use this author-created worksheet for each finished video. The example describes an imaginary craft explanation and does not predict platform acceptance.
Scroll this table sideways to see every column.
| Field | Example Entry | What To Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Channel type | Standard channel | Correct channel selected |
| Intended lesson | Fold and test one storage box | All steps visibly explained |
| Target duration | About 50 seconds | Natural narration and readable text |
| Export shape | Vertical | Actual width and height |
| Export duration | Enter measured value | Opening and trailing frames included |
| Audio | Original narration; chosen music | Rights and permitted usage recorded |
| Upload date | Enter actual date | Relevant classification rule |
| Result | Record after upload | Classification and any restrictions |
Do not fill the result row in advance. Keep it distinct from the target row. If the platform outcome differs from your expectation, compare the actual file, upload date and channel type with the current help page before repeatedly uploading the same file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I Always Use The Maximum Duration?
No. Choose the time needed to deliver the explanation without rushing or padding it.
Is Aspect Ratio The Same As Resolution?
No. Aspect ratio describes shape; resolution describes pixel dimensions. Record both when checking an export.
Can I Check Duration From The Script Alone?
No. Read it aloud for planning, then measure the finished file with its pauses, opening and final frames included.
What If A Longer Version Feels Padded?
Remove repeated setup, narrow the promise or divide distinct questions into separate videos. Keep the explanation complete.
