Key Facts

  • Record the threshold, measurement period and date together.
  • Earlier access and advertising revenue eligibility are different checks.
  • An application worksheet should record missing evidence, not guess it.
  • This guide was reviewed on 3 October 2026; future changes are labelled below.

What Is The Main Shorts Entry Threshold?

The main YPP route currently requires 1,000 subscribers and either ten million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days or 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months. Reaching a threshold leads to review; it does not guarantee acceptance. Source: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851?hl=en

Write down which route you are assessing. Do not combine part of the Shorts target with part of the watch-hour target and call the combined amount sufficient. Compare your account against one complete route using the applicable counter and time window.

What Does Expanded YPP Offer?

In eligible countries, expanded YPP has an earlier route requiring 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in 90 days, and either three million qualified Shorts views in 90 days or 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months. It provides access to specified fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to their requirements; the higher thresholds apply to additional benefits including ad revenue sharing. Check availability for your actual channel location. A screenshot from another creator's account is not evidence that the same programme route is available to you.

Which Account Requirements Need Checking?

YouTube lists compliance with monetisation policies, residence in an available country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, advanced-features access, and one active linked AdSense for YouTube account or readiness to create one through Studio. Use this author-created readiness worksheet. Keep private account details out of shared production briefs.

Check Evidence To Record Status
Applicable programme route Current official guidance and Earn screen Ready / incomplete
Subscriber requirement Dated account counter Ready / incomplete
Relevant viewing requirement Counter plus measurement period Ready / incomplete
Account prerequisites Each prerequisite checked individually Ready / incomplete
Content review preparation Sources, permissions and originality review Ready / incomplete
Application progress Current Earn status and next action Ready / incomplete

Do not mark a row ready because you intend to fix it later. The worksheet should reveal what remains to do, not make the application appear complete.

Which Views And Hours Are Excluded?

YouTube's threshold guidance excludes private, unlisted and deleted Shorts, advertising-campaign views and Image Posts in the Shorts Feed. Qualifying watch hours for the long-form route exclude Shorts; Shorts Feed watch time does not satisfy the 4,000-hour target. Source: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851?hl=en

The public Shorts view count was broadened on 31 March 2025 to include starts and replays without a minimum watch time. YouTube says YPP eligibility remains based on engaged Shorts views. A public counter therefore should not replace the relevant eligibility information. Source: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10059070?hl=en

How Do You Apply And Track The Decision?

YouTube directs eligible creators to Studio's Earn area to apply, accept the base terms and link or create the relevant AdSense account. Its systems and reviewers then assess the channel as a whole; the Earn area shows application status. Source: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851?hl=en

Before applying, review the channel's visible work and its supporting records. Fix unclear attribution and unsupported claims because they are real defects, not merely because an application is approaching.

What Has Been Announced For 2027?

YouTube's YPP page states that updated terms must be accepted by 31 January 2027 for changes starting 1 February 2027. Its Shorts revenue page separately announces a monthly ten-million-qualified-views condition over a defined preceding 90-day window from that date. Recheck both before planning across the change. Sources: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851?hl=en https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12504220?hl=en

For new applicants from 1 February 2027, YouTube has announced these entry routes. They do not replace the current requirements until that future date.

Subscribers Alternative Viewing Requirement
1,000 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days
1,000 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days

The announcement says this entry-threshold change does not affect channels already in YPP. Continuing eligibility and accepting updated terms are separate matters. Source: YouTube Help; accessed 2026-10-03. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12843009?hl=en

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Should I Record My Progress?

Use a dated worksheet alongside the current Earn screen. Keep the exact counter names and periods so your next review compares like with like.

What If Two Counters Show Different Numbers?

Check what each counter measures, its visibility scope and its date range before drawing a conclusion. Save the context instead of recording an isolated number.

Should I Plan Spending Around An Expected Approval Date?

Keep that date out of your committed cash plan. Set a budget you can afford while the outcome and timing remain uncertain.

What Should I Check Before Applying?

Complete every readiness row, inspect the channel's content and retain the relevant sources and permissions. Treat unresolved items as work to finish, not assumptions to ignore.
