Key Facts
- Several ordinary details can identify someone when combined.
- Keep details that serve the explanation, not merely curiosity.
- Check screenshots, narration and metadata together.
- Renaming a person is not a complete privacy review.
What Is The Story Actually About?
Write the lesson without personal identifiers. If it concerns a scheduling misunderstanding, the audience may need the conflicting instructions but not the employee's full name, workplace address or private message history.
Use an author-created fictional example: a café worker receives two different start times for the same shift. The Short is about confirming changes in one shared place. The café, worker and messages are invented.
That fiction lets us examine the editorial decision without exposing a real person. In a real adaptation, establish your permission and source basis before treating someone's experience as production material.
YouTube's privacy guidance considers factors including image or voice, full name, financial information, contact information and other personally identifiable information. It also considers consent, public interest and newsworthiness in reviewing complaints.

What Does A Necessity Review Look Like?
This author-created worksheet separates the lesson from identifying detail in the fictional café story.
Bring the full script, visuals and source permissions. For each identifying detail, state its purpose and who could recognise it. The output is a less exposing adaptation and any unresolved permission or public-interest questions, not guaranteed anonymity.
Scroll this table sideways to see every column.
| Detail | Needed For The Lesson? | Identification Concern | Editorial Choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two conflicting start times | Yes | Low in isolation | Keep the conflict |
| Exact café street address | No | Identifies workplace | Remove |
| Worker name | No | Direct identifier | Omit the name; use an accurate role and explain changed identifying details where needed |
| Screenshot with profile photo | No | Adds image and account clues | Replace with an invented text illustration |
| Rare job title and local festival date | No | Combination could narrow identity | Generalise the setting and time |
| Confirmation message | Yes | Original wording may identify sender | Paraphrase with permission and preserve meaning |
The revised opening becomes: “A worker received one shift time in the rota and another in a message.” Viewers can understand the conflict without the address or profile picture.
Do not describe a real person as fictional merely because you changed their name. Explain which identifying details were changed and assess whether the person remains identifiable.
How Do You Test Combinations Of Clues?
Read the script as someone who knows the person, workplace or community. Would the unusual event, timing and role identify them even without a name?
Look beyond the voiceover. A logo in the background, a map pin, a username in the title or a filename shown on screen can restore the identity you removed from the script.
If the story needs a specific location or role, decide whether the benefit justifies including it and whether the relevant permissions and other requirements are addressed. A worksheet cannot resolve a contested public-interest decision by itself.
What Should You Do With Messages And Screenshots?
Ask whether the original visual is necessary. In the fictional café example, an invented graphic reading “Rota: morning / message: afternoon” explains the conflict without pretending to reproduce someone's private conversation.
If using real messages, assess the sender, recipient, surrounding context and third parties mentioned. A crop that removes the sender's name may still display a phone number, profile image or unrelated personal detail.
Avoid paraphrasing in a way that changes the accusation or makes someone appear more unreasonable. Reducing exposure should not distort the event.

When Should You Hold The Story?
Hold when essential facts are disputed, permission is unclear, a person remains identifiable in sensitive circumstances or the story's value depends mainly on exposing them. Narrow the topic or use an entirely invented teaching example instead.
For material from a public discussion site, assess the source rights separately: https://dreamwild.ai/guides/reddit-story-rights/
Ask a fresh reviewer to check the whole video, including its title and captions. They should be able to follow the scheduling problem without encountering unnecessary identifiers in a screenshot or background detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Changing A Name Make A Story Anonymous?
Not necessarily. Review combinations of location, occupation, timing, relationships and unusual events that could still identify someone.
Can I Keep An Identifying Detail Because It Is Interesting?
Ask whether it is necessary to the explanation and whether you have a suitable basis to include it. Interest alone is not the same as necessity.
Should I Include Screenshots Of Private Messages?
Review permission, identifiers and the need for the screenshot itself. A careful paraphrase or a clearly invented illustration may communicate the point with less exposure.
Does This Worksheet Guarantee Legal Compliance?
No. It is a practical editorial review. A sensitive or disputed story may need qualified advice about the actual people, facts and intended publication.
