Key Facts
- Reading a public post does not complete a rights check.
- Save the requested use alongside the author's response.
- Permission and monetisation review are separate decisions.
- The request worksheet below is not a legal agreement.
Does Reddit's Licence Give You Permission?
Reddit's User Agreement says users retain their ownership rights while granting a licence to Reddit. It also places restrictions on commercial exploitation and derivative uses of its services or content, subject to its terms and applicable law. Do not treat the licence granted to Reddit as permission granted to your channel.

Check the version and regional terms that apply to your use. The author's permission is one part of the review; it does not automatically resolve platform access conditions or rights belonging to other people.
For a recurring commercial workflow, get advice on the actual arrangement before relying on a collection of informal messages. This guide helps identify questions; it does not decide whether a particular adaptation is lawful.
What Should You Establish Before Asking?
Identify the exact post and whether the account appears to be its author. A reposting account may not control the underlying writing. If the story includes a photograph, screenshot or quoted message, list that material separately.
Decide what you want to create. A verbatim reading, an edited adaptation and an original commentary video are different proposals. State whether you will use the username, screenshots, a synthetic narrator, monetisation and publication on additional platforms.
Avoid making the request sound smaller than the intended use. “Can I share this?” may not tell the author that you intend to adapt the whole story into an ongoing commercial video series.
What Can A Permission Request Look Like?
This author-created worksheet is a starting message for discussion, not a complete contract. Fill the brackets with accurate details and review the arrangement before relying on it.
I am preparing a video for [channel and destination]. I would like to [read/adapt/comment on] your post at [exact post URL].
The planned video would use [specific text or elements], with [type of narration and visuals]. It may earn revenue through [intended methods]. I propose crediting you as [credit wording], or discussing an alternative if you prefer.
Are you the author and able to grant permission for these uses? Please identify any conditions, material you do not control, or details you do not want included. I will not treat no response as approval.
Keep the answer with the original request. If the scope changes, revisit it. Do not conceal important conditions in a different conversation or rely on a moderator's approval as evidence of an author's rights.
What Else Can Remain Unresolved?
A personal story can identify people without naming them. Locations, workplaces and distinctive events may make a supposedly anonymous adaptation recognisable. Removing the username alone does not finish the privacy review.
Check whether the story's allegations are verified, disputed or simply the poster's account. Avoid converting an unverified accusation into factual narration. Do not imitate the poster's actual voice or likeness merely because they agreed to text adaptation.
YouTube's copyright guidance lists permission and applicable exceptions as possible routes, but warns that none guarantees avoiding copyright problems. Exceptions differ by jurisdiction.

Would A Reading Qualify For Monetisation?
YouTube's reused-content policy is separate from copyright and can apply even when permission exists. Its examples of ineligible content include channels exclusively reading material they did not create. A permission screenshot does not replace a substantive creative contribution.

Do not interpret that as a recipe where adding a short reaction guarantees approval. Ask what your video contributes that is materially different and useful, then review the channel as a whole.
An alternative is to write an original fictional story, clearly present it as fiction, and document your own drafts. That avoids making someone else's unverified personal account the foundation of your episode.

Frequently Asked Questions
What If The Author Does Not Reply?
Keep permission marked unresolved and choose other material. Do not treat silence or an unanswered message as approval.
Should I Use A Screenshot Of The Post?
Only after reviewing that specific use, including visible usernames and other details. Permission to adapt text may not describe the screenshot you plan to show.
What If The Account Is Reposting Someone Else's Story?
Find and check the underlying rights holder before proceeding. A reposting account's response does not establish that it controls the material.
Can I Turn The General Theme Into Original Fiction?
Develop your own characters, events and wording, then label the result as fiction. Do not present a lightly rewritten version of a specific person's story as independently created.
